Heard about the importance of healthy gut bacteria but don’t like fermented food? Well this may just be the answer for you.
I come from a Greek background so was brought up on a very Mediterranean, simple diet which did include fermented dairy but DID NOT include sauerkraut or any other fermented vegetables so you can imagine my surprise when we did the GAPS diet and I needed to incorporate this crazy food into my diet.
So what do you do when you need to get ferments into your diet but you can’t stand the taste?? You use Sauerkraut juice instead.
Now yes, it does taste strange on it’s own and will take a little getting used to but because it’s a liquid it’s very easy to get into the kids and yourself and here’s how you go about it.
For the kids I have two simple solutions…. Firstly (and this is what I do), I add about a teaspoon to some juice along with their supplements they take in the morning then I grab my handy syringe and give them their “medicine”… works like a charm.
If that doesn’t appeal to you then you can add it to their food… the only thing you need to know when adding fermented foods to a meal is that it needs to be no hotter than blood temperature which actually isn’t that difficult to do when serving the kids dinner. Test the food on your wrist to make sure the temperature is right then add in the sauerkraut juice.. they’ll never know you were there.
For you adults, I either suck it up, put it on a spoon and take it straight followed by a glass of water, or I add it to my salad with some Apple Cider Vinegar, the two flavours go well together.
So if you’re like me and can’t get your head around fermented foods every day then this is the answer.
In the meantime, stay calm and stay healthy.
